Top Ten Triathlons in California as blogged by MIO

#6 Santa Barbara Triathlons: East Beach – Long Course (1 mile swim, 31 mile bike, 10 mile run) Sprint (500 yard swim, 6 mile bike, 2 mile run)

I’ll admit that I’ve been partial to this race since I first competed in its inaugural event in 1981. It was one of the first half Ironman triathlons ever held at the time. It continues to be a favorite destination on the triathlete’s race calendar. The event takes place during the last weekend in August each year, in one of the most beautiful seaside communities on the west coast. While it’s no longer a half Ironman, the unique distance of the long course is half way between the contemporary Olympic and a traditional half. Race Director Joe Coito has done a wonderful job maintaining the race’s original 1981 theme of “Everybody’s a Star.” Impressively, the event has raised a half million dollars for local charities in the past decade. In addition to the long course and co-ed sprint, the Santa Barbara Triathlon now offers a women’s only sprint distance race. Join me as I celebrate my 34th year there!
